The earth's average temperatures have been changing have been troughout it's history. During the past 900 00 years, cold glacial periods were followed by warmer intergacial periods. The past 10.000 years has been an interglacial period. The green house effect is a natural process that warms the earth's lower tropossphere and surface. It occurs because greenhouse gases warm the atmosphere by absorbing some infrared radiation from the earth's surface. This couses their molecules to vibrate and transform the absorbed energy into longer-wave infrared radiation in the troposphere. The two major greenhouse gases are water vapour and carbon dioxide.
