The Effect of Low Albedo.

When the Arctic Ocean was entirely covered with ice, as it was most of the time previously, it acted as a giant mirror reflecting solar radiation back to space. Now that the ice is melting, open water is exposed to sunlight. The much lower abedo of water, compared to ice, means that much more solar energy is absorbed by the ocean. This lead to warmer the water and the earth surface.
